Aoxomoxoa, shakedown street, blues for allah, american beauty.

I always get Anthem, and Aoxomoxoa mixed up.

I'm kind of stunned by this thread ... it's American Beauty no argument. I thought everyone knew that :)

It`s not that easy. The songs on AB grew so much live, that the studio versions kind of pale a little. Think Sugar Magnolia, what a good monster that became. And Ripple. Good studio version, but many a blistering live versions. But AB is pretty pretty good, I give you that.

All true ... but still to me AB is heads and shoulders above all the others.

Afternoon Ring. Not Workingman's or Anthem. Included as masterpieces.

I agree. I just think of American Beauty as being in its own category.

I would agree, with the following as closer to that # 1 than it seems you place them:

1. AB
2. WMD
3. First
4. Aox

I really don't see the others as having stood the test of time (completely from my personal, highly biased perspective!!!), though I used to think Wake was top five, perhaps Mars. [What I often recall when doing these lists is how much the band members did NOT like their own material in retrospect (not just being humble; they always found fault, esp with Wake, it seemed--or Phil just talked about it a lot...or was that the one he said he could listen to? Crap...I gotta start looking this shit up).]

I suppose that's common...just like movie stars (good ones?) that can't watch their own movies. I certainly can't stand to watch/hear myself lecturing, giving speeches...bleech!!! No matter what others say about how good it was, I hate it...hmmm, see how I once again bring this around to talking about myself?

Don't you hate that?

Haven't listened to a studio Dead album in 25 years. Not enough hours in life.

I have a question. How do you begin your own post?

Go to the top of the forum (where posts are), not the top of the page. To the right you will see, New Posts. Viola!
It's under Staff Picks if that helps.
